Using [ -e $VARIABLE] && do something with $VARIABLE would have solved it.

I dont think the inclusion of code is the problem, but that the bundle had a script for installation that was faulty.
Using
[ -e $VARIABLE] && do something with $VARIABLE
would have solved it.
